Italian-based Gambian tailor and fashion designer Ismaila Jallow is keen on taking Gambian fashion and designing to the next level as he prepares to stage the Gambia International Fashion Week in November
The Banjul-born fashion designer wants to tap and showcase the latest trends from the world of designers to fashion enthusiasts on a global platform.
“The Gambia International Fashion Week aims to offer a variety of activities, including fashion exhibitions, runaway presentations, designer showcases, and workshops. Prominent individuals from the fashion industry, including designers, influencers, celebrities, and professionals are expected to attend”
Drawing from his journey to Italy, Jallow said he was inspired to use fashion to change people’s way of thinking no matter their situation
“This led me to come up with the idea of the Gambia International Fashion Week, to show how my country is developing through fashion”
According to the fashion designer, the Gambia fashion industry is growing but still lags when compared when compared to other countries. He said the fashion week would offer a platform for designers to network.
“Our fashion week offers designers the opportunity to gain exposure, connect with industry professionals, and promote their brands on a larger scale. It also serves as a gathering for fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship involved in creating beautiful garments”
Asked whether he was working with any group of fashion designers, or government?
“No, I am not currently working group of fashion designers or receiving help from any government yet. However, I believe the Gambia International Fashion Week has the potential to bring about change and we are open to collaboration with everyone. Our goal is not to compete or challenge anyone, but rather provide an inclusive platform for all” he stated
