Corruption scandal rock Macky’s Senegal
A report on the BBC Panorama Program has unearthed corruption in the Senegalese energy industry. There are claims of corruption involving Mr Alieu Salla, brother of Macky Sall.
The reports have it that a company called Petro-Tim was given exploration rights in two blocks in Senegal. This company has often been accused of impropriety in the way it does business in Africa.
It is reported that after coming to office, Macky ordered investigation into how the contract was awarded but later went ahead to give them the rights anyway.
Senegalese president’s brother, Alieu Sall was hired by the company at a monthly salary of $25, 000 for five years. Britain Petroleum (BP) then bought the contract at $250m and will pay Petro-Tim nine to twelve million dollars. The company will also enjoy royalties for forty years.
Both Petro-Tim and Alieu Sall have denied wrong doing.
