
The Mayoress of Banjul City Council Rohey Malick Lowe on Saturday spearheaded the launching of REFELA The Gambia Chapter at the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul.
Women from the lengths and breath of the country gathered to witness to what they call “A turning point for Gambian women in all areas of development”.
While addressing the gathering, Mayoress Rohey Lowe said REFELA The Gambia Chapter is a woman platform of African Cities of Local governments in Africa.
According to her the objective of the project is to make sure that no woman is left behind; Gender Equality in local politics and support Gambian women financially through entrepreneurship.
“We need to support and stand for each other as women if we want to forge ahead in life” Rohey emphasized. “The only reason why we are left behind is because we don’t love and appreciate each other. The change should start with us (women)”.
Lowe further revealed that the launching of the project was supported by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) through the Regional coordinator Aissata De who according her helps anytime she knocks at her door.
She explained that the United Cities of Local Government (UCLG) is an umbrella organization and the united voice representing local governments in Africa. Established in 2005 in South Africa as a result of the unification of 3 continental growth of local governments.
“It was also established as the African Section of the World Organization”. She continued,
UCLG Africa has a membership of 44 National Associations of local governments from all regions in Africa as well as 2,000 cities that have more than 100,000 inhabitants.
As such she said the organization represents nearly 350 million African citizens to ensure gender participation.
Fanta Bai Secka Director of Women’s Bureau called Gambian women to United and work together as one.
The regional Coordination of UNDP, Aissata De said her organization will continue to give support to Gambian women in all areas of development.
